Bongo Fury

Hi all
Have recently bought a 2.5 manual diesel bongo from a private seller. The clock reads 146000 and when advertised and questioned seller before purchase, this was in kms, so actually about 90000 miles. During my pre research and before found this one for sale, found that this is common. So didn't really question it too much. Looked at van and (apart from a horrible decal) seemed a good one, bought it. After owning for 2 days, realised odometer was turning over slowly and, after testing, worked out that clock was working round on miles. Had a look about what they do for odometers After import and can't work out a) how can work out true mileage and b)whether I have been done over during sale? Any help or info would be much appreciated, although not sure I can do much anyway as private sale. Bugger. Thanks in advance

Most likely the speedo was changed to read mph on import, so if you can find the reading then I'd take it as kms to that date, then mile, so easy enough to work out total distance.

Reading should be found on MoT history.

I really wouldn't worry about it, though, you should get plenty more miles from the solid diesel.

Maybe has had the chip to convert km signal to mph so odometer and speedo now km?

Both my Bongo’s read & count in KM’s but all the MOT history shows this as Miles! It was only on my last MOT that they actually put down KM’s (Picture Attached...)

You can check the MOT mileage history with the likes of “My Car Check” App...

My ‘98 has 119,000 KM with standard clocks so speedo only has KM’s & my ‘02 has 211,000 KM with MPH & KMH Speedo but ODO still counts KM’s.


If reading in Miles now then you could work out when it was imported & what the MOT mileage was then...
That would be KM’s & from there on would be miles...
Example:
Imported with 80,000 KMS (Speedo/ODO Converted)
Now reading 150,000
80K = 49,710 Miles
150,000 - 80,000 = 70,000 Miles
So Total Miles would be: 119,710

They are usually converted with a small chip wired in behind The instrument cluster (tapped into the rear instrument cluster PCB) or can be done with a dual face speedo (reads KM & Miles but ODO will still read in KM’s)

It’s not compulsory to convert the Speedo/ODO if over 10-years old when it comes into the UK.

Wouldn’t worry too much about the mileage anyway on the JDM Imports as long as it’s been looked after & drives spot on should have no worries

Thanks all. Great help. So first mot read 67000 so about 42000. Clock now reads 146000 so presuming true mileage is around 104000. Not too far off what was advertised so I'll leave that one. Thanks all for help.
