Missing Banjo Filter?

Hi - we recently purchased an early 2000 Ford Freda (2.5 diesel) whose service history is a bit thin on the ground. With this in mind I've given it an oil/air/diesel filter change and fresh oil. On the advice of various forum posts I went to check the Banjo filter but as far as I can see I don't have one! Would it have been removed for any reason? Presumably I shouldn't be running it without one...?

There also seems to be a distinct lack of power - certainly a lot more sluggish than our old Bongo (also a 2.5 Diesel) - any ideas?

Banjo filter is the last line of defence against grot in the fuel getting into the engine. Highly recommended. The filter is recessed so not visible but can be pulled out using a cotton bud.

Can't think of a reason for not having one, except that it was damaged or lost and somebody couldn't be bothered to replace it.

I removed the banjo bolt and washers/spacers and gently put a cotton bud down into the hole. I inserted it far enough to (almost) lose the bud into the hole so I'm pretty certain there isn't a filter in there! Best purchase one...

year approx 99- 2000 onwards turbo is different to the early ones, its variable vanes can stick or even touch the outer turbo casing, the tolerances are really fine on the internals, this is ok when new but years on when the thing gets carboned up it starts to act up.this can also affect the wastegate, both these can result in loss of performance and can even put the bongo into limp mode etc.

i was reading something recently on cleaning these out by using oven cleaner then wash out but im sure you could buy a purpose made cleaner.

does anyone know if its a vnt turbo like this link.

Before you start sticking unwanted strainers into your FIP you need to check and make sure that your model of FIP actually supports a strainer.

The later type FIP on these wltd engines do not have a strainer (banjo filter)

Hi teenmal - thank you for the advice. How would I go about checking whether my engine is meant to have a strainer or not? I've ordered one from the Bongo shop but as you say - I don't want to stuff an unwanted strainer in there!

You should be able to ask your parts department/supplier and they could check it is suitable ,you will need to give them the VIN and details from the pump casing.

Interestingly although the diagrams at lushprojects show the banjo bolt, they don't show the spring and filter for any of the diesel revisions of the Bongo.Unless I'm looking at the wrong diagrams (Fuel Pump diagrams)

noticed that also. I checked all fuel related diags.
