Diesel Fuel Filter Problem

Take a look at the following photo



The one on the left is the old filter, the one on the right in a new fuel filter as supplied by us at the Bongo Shop. We have had the same query from 2 different members about these newly supplied filters, and we are trying to establish what the problem is. Ian from Exmouth has told us:

"I've just removed the old fuel filter and when I try to fit the new fuel filter, I find that there isn't enough room in the base of it to re-fit the white plastic assembly." See the photo below.



Forum user dave_aber also had this problem: "Looking at the old & new side by side, I can see that the internal plate in the old is around 42mm from the lower 'O' ring face, and on the new it's about 19mm."

So do we have a bad batch of filters on our hands? They are Solid Ace filters M303006. Or is there something else going on? Until the matter is resolved we have withdrawn our fuel filters from the Bongo Shop. I will also order a different brand fuel filter so we can have a look.

The one on the left is probably a Crosland F30316. (Gold coloured filter)

Maybe. But the Crosland filter cross references to the Solid one.

Getting a bit confused here, the new filter that terminallybewildered has is MB433425 does this CR with M303006.?

It would appear that AVA Leisure (www.mazdabongo.com) who use the same suppliers (Solid) have had an identical problem. It is a manufacturing fault that only affects Solid filters with a part number on the box of M303006. It's a problem with a bad batch, and Solid are aware of it.

If you have bought one of these from the Bongo Shop, check the depth of the aperture. If it's less than 40mm, you have a bad one and it should be returned to us. Please enclose proof of purchase and we will issue you with a replacement and refund your postage costs.

If you have bought one of these filters from another retailer contact them direct.

You will not believe this.

I ordered a replacement fuel filter from mazdabongo on the advice of Ian M. It's just arrived in the post. I took it out of the carton next to the 'faulty' one I got from the bongofury shop earlier AND that fuel filter has SPONTANEOUSLY created the required space for the sediment trap!

It's just been sitting on my garage bench for a few days and maybe the change in temperature (it's certainly not hot in my garage) has caused the internals to relax! What do you think of that? It's unbelievable but true. Here are the photos:

Yes, I'm ashamed to say. I've just posted this: Wondered why I'd chosen the name 'terminally bewildered'. You're right. Lost the plot already. Oh b****r. Will go and have a lie down now . . . .

Still, at least I didn't buy the replacement for nothing . . . .
