Expansion tank capacity

Post by Blueskai » Sun Aug 19, 2012 11:31 pm

I've been tinkering and flushed my coolant system. A necessary job as I replaced one of the metal pipes. Having a few issues

The tank was at a good level when hot at 6pm, but I just added about 400ml as it had dropped. Would this amount of loss take it below the expansion pipes and therefore require another bleed?

All depends on what you mean by 'a good level'.
The difference between volume of coolant at the 'Hi and Lo' level marks is approx 600ml.
The difference between 'Lo' mark down to the entry/exit pipes (danger point) is 360ml.
So, in answer to your question, it all depends on what you refer to as 'a good level'.

Another bleed will do more good than harm :) It would appear that you left some air in the system when you bled it.

Cheers.

if you bled it using the you tube method its best to leave it 15-20mm above the full line when you cap it off, then when its cool in the morning it should be bang on the full mark when cold.
