Which wheels drive the bongo

Yesterday I was trying to reverse in my driveway, I had on half the van on ice and the other on dry paving, the rear wheel (offside) on the ice span with no traction and the other rear wheel just sat there doing nothing, I would have expected the wheel on the paving to work and help the other out, so my van was stuck and I had to use the other car, which is a 4x4 so it had no problems, my bongo is a 2 wheel driver so is a bongo a rear wheel drive? And secondly is it right that only one wheel should drive in reverse?

Yes buddy without going into it in to much detail your Diff will always put power to the wheel with the least resistance ie the one on the slippy stuff

Yes that is how a common or garden differential works - for both wheels to drive you need a limited slip differential which drives both half shafts and thus both wheels through an arrangement of clutches.

Revolutionary? only in the sense of wheels going round, that idea has been around for years.

It's now done automatically and called "Traction Control"

My pun didn't go to waste!


Without giving away too much, I intend using a length of Dacron rope out of the appropriate front door terminated in a hook to pull the mechanism at the wheel.

Necessity is the mother of invention!

Cheers all, so the solution is to stick a hook into the tyre and a price of rope to stop the wheel from rotating o:) or get off my fat butt and clear the snow off the drive before it turns to ice

Bit of old carpet under the drive wheels'd probably be enough to give you grip, either that or some rocksalt/grit/sand.
Also get used to using the Auto box to your advantage (assuming that's what you've got) - http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... =3&t=38644 - if you've got a manual, try setting off in a higher gear.

I wouldn't hook the wheel or tyre with a rope, if you like the number of fingers you already have. The idea of manually activating one handbrake or the other, whilst a bit heath-robinson, would probably work. An old bit of carpet under each wheel is far more traditional though...
