Charge and sediment lights on: Polish emergency!

Text received from Polish contingent. One vehicle has charge and sediment lights on permanantly. Alternator holding charge OK. Banjo filter , fuel filter and water trap all OK. Said I would get back to them....forum search reveals that this is a classic case of alternator on its way out.

The key decision is should they continue? They are 3 hours from destination. My guess is that they should keep moving, and then source a new alternator once at campsite' if vehicle makes it.

I am just off to airport hotel (in 10 mins!) so will check on forum for responses tonight.

They should be able to make it if they use as little power as possible should the alternator actually give up completely.

Better to at the campsite waiting for an alternator than stuck at the side of the road.

Can't you take one out in your hand baggage?

If any others have a twin battery pack, have one on standby to use if they don't get the full 3 hours out of the duffer. When mine went, I got little more than an hour of running with everything off, even using the handbrake & gears to slow down to save a bit of juice.

If it's a diesel all it needs is enough voltage to keep the fuel cut off solenoid open.
If nothing else is switched on there should be little or no drain on the battery as there is no ignition system to power.
A decent battery should last far more than 3 hours, yours must have been well discharged to last only an hour.

Can anyone in the North West Section get an alternator to the Holiday Inn at Speke tonight!

It needs to be 'boxed' so that it can be taken on the plane.

This is for Ian Maynard to take out to Poland with him. See Techie section " Charge & Sediment Lights on" Topic. He will be arriving at the Holiday Inn from 1930 hrs tonight

I am acting as a relay for Ian's request. If you can help at all.

It is an EMERGENCY.

ALL SORTED . picking alternator and belts up at Mike (wheelquick) house later.

then off to Speke (holiday inn) with the good guidance of DABS and his sat nav.
