Broken pipe near engine block - what is it?

Post by Matt&JoyBongling » Fri Jul 11, 2008 9:45 am

Found that this pipe was broken when pondering how to undo a fuel filter.

It is at the top of the bay, on the driver's side, close to the engine block.

Any idea what it is, what it does and how important it is?

Cheers,

M

Hi Guys I'm quite sure that is to do with the vacum, which is used to control the turbo, check in the faq sheets in member area for a better answer, or somebody with more techie savvy will no doubt come along

PS #-o put your location in profile you may have an owner near you

are you sure its broken and not blocked ? the reason being it looks like the EGR pipe that has to be blocked ,when the EGR is taken out or a metal piece put in to block it. (but i could be wrong.)
Lost without my Bongo.

Hi Guys,
thanks for the replies.

In order of responses,

Sparkymik; it makes sense as the pipe goes to the brass coloured widget that links to the throttle. As for location, I have Bedford dislayed on my pc under my user name, date of joining etc. on the LHS of the screen. Is it visible on your browser?

Daveblueozzie; the rubber pipe has a insert in it which looks as if it has come off the black unit which is under the white plastic connector in the photo. I thought that the insert was hollow but will take a closer look when it stops raining.

Keefysher; I'll have a look at the thread you suggested. It does not appear to have changed the driving characteristics of the bongo but I do not know how long it has been broken and have not done any heavy driving recently. The cruise control problem was down to the wires between the "brain" and the servo working lose - the plastic connectors were firm but the wires going to the connectors were not firmly attached.

Cheers,
M

They are all vacuum valves (4 in total I think). They control actuators for the EGR valve & throttle actuator. When you start the van, the revs are slightly higher then drop once it has started to warm up. Also when you switch on th aircon, it increases the revs. This is controlled by two of the valves.

I'm going to get van out of the garage in a minute so will try to work out which on it is from the picture. They are made by Mitsibishi, so are probably standard on other Jap cars. You could either repair with Arraldite or get a replacement from a scrap van.

Ok, there are 2 at the back of the engine for the EGR. The front 2 are connected to a vacuum actuator to vary the idle revs. The one in the picture is the front one that has a rubber pipe connected & this has a dotted pale line along its length. This connects to the rear of the actuator. The other pipe fron the 2nd valve connects to the underside of the actuator. I'm not sure how they work as pair. It could be one moves the actuator back & the other one forward. If that is case, then its the one that would increase the revs thats snapped.

It ought to be fixed, but wont affect the van when your moving, only when you first start up, or switch on the aircon - the revs will drop slightly.

There are loads on Bongos being broken for spares on ebay, so you should be able to pick one up quite easily. See my post yesterday for some examples: http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... =3&t=23305

Many thanks Simon. Your diagnosis sounds correct and I am relieved that it is not significant :D ; our Bongo has struggled a little when starting - I attributed this to a need to have service (now done) but I had also noticed a drop in revs with the aircon on. I'll have a look at fixing it but will have a look at the other connectors as well - I can only assume that it broke due to vibrations and age; I can't see how else it was broken :? .
