Help.! Ive got the hold light flashing

Post by Mr Frosty » Thu Jun 19, 2008 5:25 pm

Over the last week or so the hold light has started flashing after about 15 mins from start up with no apparent gear change issues. The fault has always cleared after the car has been stationary for a while. It started to flash this morning on my way to work, but on start up tonight its still flashing! It dont seem to engage the overdrive gear that usually kicks in a few seconds after 4th? engages.I have a 200 mile trip on Saturday. If i cant get anything sorted tomorrow, will it be ok to drive that distance without the overdrive kicking in.? :(

Lots of info in search frosty but flashing hold light usually means not engaging 4th or lockup. you're liable to overheat the engine if running in too low a gear in warm temps. at speed.

the hold light flashing means you have gone into "get me home mode" so it can not be driven over 40mph

you can check for the fault codes a fact sheet is in members section and depending on what comes up you can decide what to do
but driving 200 miles no

I doubt you would want to pay for the amount of fuel you'd use on a 200 mile trip in third gear either.

good news - next job - find the leak 8) sometimes the oil cooler pipes can leak. Remember to check the level with the engine warm, idling in "D", handbrake fully (almost typed hard  ) on and wheel chocked if neccessary - after rowing it through the gears a few times.

Thanks for the reply Dandy.I made a bad reading off the dipstick last night and found i was ok on the ATF levels.Just as a process of elimination,i had a complete fluid change this morning exactly as per fact sheet.Put the whole 5 litres in,then took the bongo out on the dual carriageway for half an hour at a fair pace  No problems at all.Went through the gears lovely. On the way home this evening,on comes the old hold light again :!: Cant get fourth anymore ,so Bongo will be sitting on my drive next week; and i,m busy making alternative holiday arrangements.I,m gutted. Thanks again folks for all the replies. Will post again on my return.Chris

1. Have you got a chipped speedo (i.e. is your odometer in miles not km)?

Lots of posts here about speedo chips interfering with gearbox electrics.

2. Did you have the filter cleaned when the aft fluid changed?

You need to read the transmission fault code -- there's a fact sheet in the members area on how to do it. I had some hold light/ safe mode experiences recently. The code was for the overrunning clutch solenoid, and with a new solenoid pack installed in the trans (£300 parts and labour) haven't had a flashing hold light since.

If you're very lucky, it could be an electrical connection to the solenoid rather than the solenoid itself. You will need to find a mechanic who specializes in automatic transmissions. Where do you live? -- there may be somebody on this forum who knows a good transmission repair shop in your area.
