Last checked our Bongo hoses December, when they were fine. Took it in this week to sort the dodgey fuel gauge (sender unit, not earth). I noticed the top hose was swollen to twice its normal size, ready to blow...8 weeks after last checked. The bleed pipe was also starting to rub through.
Sorted the hoses and blanked the EGR as I could see black smoke leaking from the pipe. Then fitted 'Dixie' air horns - just for show of course, as they're not legal on this age of vehicle.

What's the likely cause?

old age,
My friends wife had a Skoda Diesel, top hose did the same
they replaced it but did not check the others, one let go
in the Tyne tunnel, she did not want to stop in there and
carried on going needle off the clock, has she pulled into the
first lay by the engine stopped.
The engine would still turn but no compression at all head
scrap, it had got so hot the oil pump "it had a plastic rotor"
had melted" not worth mending the car.
So it's not just Bongo's .

very sound advice ...check your hoses regularly.....people do seem to be buying this hose more then any other ....reasons why this one is prone to go ? age does seem to be the favourite....they won't last forever

I do wonder, if it needs changing, whether it isn't worth getting all the main culprits done as well. It would p** me off to go through all that coolant refill and bleed malarky only to be doing it again inside 2 years 'cos another hose let go. Mind you, right now I'm just living on borrowed time a la coolant alarm

You only read of the bongo's that have had coolant related problems mike, most have never had any... The coolant alarm IS a great pre-warning of a potential meltdown...
You are very dilligent with your preventative maintenence mike, odds are, you'll "catch" a problem before it occurs... (if i've just jinxed you...sorry

What's the likely cause?
It was just old age.

We fitted Mazda replacement hoses and expect them to last as long as the old ones did.

I think this should be a fact sheet with pictures showing which hoses are likely to be a problem and possible replacement options....
Any takers??
