I've screwed mine to bumper

My sensor is under a bolt on the drivers side of the head / box cover

What I have done has dropped my head temp by 5-7 c
Stat still opens
So I'm happy im running at a lower temp
This is something I shall be doing. A simple but effective modification. With the toast rack of radiators the Bongo has anything to improve air flow is good. :)

I think the lesson here is:- a bongo in good well maintained order will run and cool without any problems at all and without any modifications at all. If you need to make any modifications at all to try and improve cooling then you have a underlying problem or you are overcooling for no reason.
I'll get my coat!!

If the stats opening
I'm not over cooling the engine

I think the original requirement is to provide good cooling for the autobox when towing. In the 80's and 90's it was perceived wisdom to add addtional cooling for autobox towing. My every day temps/cooling is spot on.
Heavy loads eg towing up hills / mountains does increase the temp to the extent i might investigate this with the intent of using a James Bond style rotating number plate. (vertical to horizontal only)

Personally I would leave the cooling/heating system to do the job that it was designed for. Needing extra cooling for the auto box if you do a lot of Towing I would fit an uprated cooler in the ATF system.

Good Luck.

I have left the cooling / heating system to do the job it was designed for alone
Not done any mods to the cooling system
I do a lot of towing and have fitted a 13row cooling rad on the ATF system
I've fixed this in front of existing rads
And moved the number plate to the side to give the rads more air flow
This has resulted in a 7c drop in head temp
Just thought I'd let you all know

Might just be more airflow through the engine bay which is dropping the sensor temp
I didn't feel if the handbrake / engine cover was any cooler will check this weekend
And see if the water temp from rad to engine is any cooler

Fitting a better transmission cooler is beneficial to the AT and in my humble opinion is worth fitting whether you tow or not.
If it were to be fitted in front of the main rad like Gasy has done ( and I will be too) it must reduce the air flow.
Moving the number plate to help reinstate that loss is not going to over cool the engine because the stat wouldn't allow it.
So in retrospect I dont think it would really be a mod more compensating for the cooling area lost by the obstruction.
If it did result in an increase air flow in that area all to the good it may benefit the inter cooler maybe lowering the head temp a bit too.

Had a humble Renault in this week with an overheating problem flagging a fault code, turned out to be the thermostat.
This stat is controlled electrically by the ECU, when I spoke to the guys at Renault they told me that shortly that humble cooking saloon will be fitted with a constant flow electric water pump working in conjunction with the Estat.
Lower coolant content ,faster warm up,better emission figures and more head gaskets!

Gawd luv a duck!
