Cigarette Lighter Replacement

Post by Alan2016 » Sun Jan 29, 2017 3:51 pm

The fusible link in my dashboard socket has blown so I have pulled it out initially intending to replace the wire with some fuse wire. I then got to thinking why not just replace the whole thing with a native USB socket as that is all we ever plug in there. Has anyone else done this and can they recommend a good replacement? I have seen these on eBay which look like they might do the job?

Thanks

I did that on the VW. Worked fine for a good while but then failed. It meant changing the whole thing,a bit of a mission on the VW.
So I replaced it with a good quality ciggy lighter and used a USB chager adaptor from then on.
Not so restrictive.

If you have a spare switch blank free then these fit with a tiny little bit of filing.

Thanks guys. Hadn't seen the rectangular one, looks interesting. Think I'll try a replacement for the existing socket initially and repair the faulty one and stick it in the glove box for emergencies :)

It wasn't entirely my idea but they are a pretty neat solution.

Mine had a blue LED next to both ports which was a bit bright and unnecessary, the casing pried apart quite easily and I just snipped the LEDs off.

Thanks for the info about blue LEDs. SWIMBO complains like "expletive deleative" about a blue LED "thing" that i've got in the Bongo.
but probably wont complain (too much) when we can charge 2 phones and power my "thing". and an AA battery charger all at same time,
Whoopee!

Pfft, amateurs, I've only got 14 USB Sockets in my van, with at least 2 more to be added in the AFT when I get round to it.
