I'm curious about how things like this might be put to use:

I guess how coolant will get circulated around the system needs to be considered. Will the standard thermostat prevent it, and can convection alone be relied on or will a (power consuming) electric pump be needed.

But then i found this:

Which is exactly what i've been wondering about. Sounds perfect :-) I want one. 8)

What are you looking for Mike ? Something to heat the car and engine up before a run or something to keep you warm all night long ?
I can see the video works well for getting the car and engine hot before starting the morning run, not so sure it would work well for overnight heating with all that current being used, additional electric pump (10 Amps) to circulate coolant around engine, air con fans (10 Amps), and a glowplug (8 Amps) ....

Thats the challenge. Will it be possible to take that broad principle and make it into a night heater. Maybe it won't be?

Webasto Thermo top C has a stated electrical consumption of 42W when running not sure if that includes a circulation pump though. They do have a variant specifically for motor homes that use the vehicles existing heater matrix(s) to heat the vehicle as well as additional outlets. It would appear that the engine block can be switched in/out of the circuit.
I hadn't expected the Bongo fans to be such a load though.
I would likely only be using the rear heater and just heating the engine block for cold starts, obviously wouldn't be running AC.
Hot water is not a concern I would boil up a kettle for a shower and washing. That would simplify it. I would also be looking at installing insulation in the van.
All that would be lost as soon as the roof went up though. :(
If we can get it up!
The pros of fitting a Propex is the space gained by removing the rear heater assy and that I already have one. The cons are additional gas storage requirement and consumption and it is fairly noisy although I could rubber mount the unit and install it under the van some where that may help.
Needs some deep thought. :|

Don't think you should need fans running and it would defeat the object regarding quietness. If a convective coolant system could be got to work then no pump required for liquid either. That would just leave 42w for ignition which is no big deal. For convective you's need i guess to be heating coolant at lowest level and to have decent reservoir with temp sensing cutout. Agree hot water not needed.
