Rust treatment Whats the best.

Post by windywatson » Thu Aug 04, 2016 5:22 pm

Hi,
A question for members with some body work experiance.

Unfortunatly the rear wheel arches are starting to rust. I know that in time I may have to have the full works done getting replaced etc. In the mean time I intend to treat the rust, fill & repaint the arches & as the rust has not progressed beyond a small margin I shall be using trims to cover the area of the repair as I'm sure I wont be able to get the finish good enough for it not to be noticable.

My question is this, what is the best type of rust converter product to use on any rust left after rubbing down the arches to metalwork? Once treated I will fill any small holes etc with body filler & then undercoat & paint. Would like to have the confidance that it could be kept at bay for a couple of years. I have found that the water has got into the edges of the arches through areas where the inner arch is spot welded to the outer & the gap has opened and water has been drawn in. What would be good to use as a sealant in these areas before painting?

look foward to your advise.

Cheers

Search FERTAN RUST TREATMENT on eBay. It's good stuff!

I would be tempted to inject a good quality silicone sealant between the spot welds or a 'gum mastic'

this is the best one ive found. it works by isolating from the air by leaving a sort of plastic coating, this is paintable with or without primer, or simply left.

for seam sealing, there are purpose made sealers, see this link.

You neeed to get some form of rust killer in between the metal on those arches b4 sealing. I believe there is some called
Furtan? (I think) that comes in aerosol form with a tiny pipe , like wd40 has. Use this first and beneath any holes exposed when grinding off.Rather than body filler use a chopped mat fibre glass first and waterproof filler after.
I am bongoing in Kent at the moment but will do a "cold repair" post when I get back if that helps.

another endorsement for Fertan readily available from Chandlers (boat shops) used by narrow boat people.

That sounds great. My needs might be a bit simpler than the OP though. My arches were replaced by the dealer just before I collected the bongo. They don't seem to have the spot welded open seam underneath but just a single edge. I have read that it is a good idea to remove the read cup holders or entire panel and squirt in waxoyl from the inside. I'd certainly be interested to know if there are better alternatives or anything else I can do in addition to waxoyl to extend their lives as much as possible.

When using waxoil, waxoyl on wheel arches dilute with 20% white spirit easier to spray and penetrate (will come out of seams) It will stink for months.

If using Fertan is there any preparation work required?

Or is it simply a case of spray/rub on to affected area, leave 24hrs, then re-paint?

Will it taint non affected areas?

Spoke to Fertan guy today.
If you are using it in a blind situation like inside of a box section then there is no need to wash it off. Inject your waxes on top after leaving it for 24 hours was his recommendation.
If on an external panel then remove the worst of the rust and then wet it ,apply the fertan. leave it 24 hours then wipe over with a damp cloth to remove the dust? Then it can be painted over directly.
As to its affect on surrounding paintwork, it would seem to be dependent on coating/ type of paint used. So I would say better safe than sorry you try it in an area that would be inconspicuous like a door shut first.

So the procedure for an interior panel would be to expose the panel, coat with Fertan, wait a day then spray with waxoyl or dinitrol? Would this be the same with the stuff you link to Northern Bongolow or wouldn't that then need the waxoyl?

Thanks

Alan
