Split charge relay

Post by Bikerp » Mon Aug 29, 2016 9:05 pm

Hi all,I have just fitted a new split charge relay and am wondering if I have wired it correctly? With the engine off the SB has 12.6 volts and the LB 12.5 volts. When I switch the engine on the SB drops to 12volts and the LB stays at around 12.5.Is this normal? :?

With the engine running the starter battery should be at about 14 volts and when the relay closes the leisure battery should be at about the same voltage because it is then linked direct to the starter battery.

With the engine off (and after leaving it a couple of hours for voltages to stabilise) both batteries should read somewhere between a minimum of 12.5v and a maximum possibly as high as 13.0v

When you say switch the engine on you do mean actually start it? Once the engine is running then the alternator charges the batteries.

It should be as I said, for the reason Geoff said.

Normally if the Alternator is faulty and not charging then the "CHARGE" light will stay on on the dashboard, it will come on with the ignition and then go out when the engine is running and spinning the alternator. If its a diesel then the Sediment lamp will also be lit.

As to is it wired incorrectly I've no idea you will have to tell us what kit and how you wired it! Photo's help a lot!
