Power steering Top pinion oil seal... at last

I have now found a supplier of the Top Pinion Oil Seal..... it seems Corteco and Nok are very difficult to source these days, so I have found a supplier for the usual power steering seal failure............ in Slovakia.

These people are Power Steering specialists and will sell seals for many cars and vans as well as recon racks.

Anyway I have a supply and yes they are a reasonable price too, so you don't have to get a full rack kit unless you want to of course.

Yayyy, really useful stuff to know Mike and thanks. Don't we have some kind of sticky thread / place where we can put info on replacement/alternative parts etc? If so maybe the mods could move it / copy it to there?

thats good news mike well done, i know how hard it is to source these as i put my very good chap onto it a few years ago and he failed.

Sorry been away for a few days..... the seals ...they have to come from Slovakia... work out at £9 each to me... happy to sell on for that cost plus postage... which is of course less than a full rack kit...

The seals are listed for the Bongo/Vito/Ducato and the correct size too... a big thanks to Ingrida on this one

Hi Mike - I desperately need one of these top seals. Have you got any in stock please ?

Steering rack started leaking a year ago, but needed to stay mobile so opted for the Lucas seal restorer. It took 2 bottles but worked well enough for about 10,000 miles and twice around the Alps.....

Unfortunately it started making a noise again over Christmas and today the power steering totally failed (not nice). On checking the brake fluid it was totally empty, so refilled with the last of the Lucas stuff, only to find it was pi$$ing straight back out all over the drive !!! Reckon the cold weather finished off the remaining seal.

Started pricing up steering racks - unhappily, due to melted credit cards post-Xmas - and luckily found this thread. Hope you have a spare seal to post out urgently, as it seems daft buying a whole kit (or new rack) when only the top one has failed.

Will PM you with my details. Oh, and if anyone has a link to the best method of actually fitting the seal it would be greatly appreciated ! Thanks

I mess around with motor bikes and leaky seals are very common .. and a routine job on 2T cranks ..

I generally use a spring puller (as used to pull springs on M/Bike center stands) to get oil seals out ..

Thanks for the tips / link. It looks easy enough bar the skinned knuckles and moderate swearing to actually pull the seal out ......

Just need a seal now .......

Never done a Bongo rack .. but if you buy / borrow / utalise a 'spring' puller similar to mine .. should work fine .. I never have any hassles ..

Keep hook flat to the lip of the seal .. when it's far enough in .. twist hook into position and pull ..

Hi , it would (if you intend keeping the vehicle for any length of time)check the bearings for end float and the shaft for wear (grooved).

Good point .. also inner track rods .. and track rod ends are easily sourced from motor factures /eBay etc:..

I've done this job twice on 2 Bongos, most recently with Mikes seal which worked just fine.

My advice.

Mark how the steering lines up to make refitting easier when refitting the joint to the pinion.
I found the universal circlip pliers useless, proper internal circlip pliers are required.
I used a cordless drill to carefully drill a hole in the seal, then a woodscrew to pull the seal out, this works just fine.

Well done to Mike for sourcing this seal, my MOT man was impressed I had fixed it for so little!
