Coolant alarm screw

Yes I've taken it all out again and attached to the ring where I was getting 14v now I'm getting 12.6. Ok I'll put it back in and see what I get, but the ring isn't corroded because I cleaned it.

No different but I did notice the end of the wire attached to the ring corroded so I've cut that back to some clean wire and reconnected. Watching the meter it does start around 1.8v but slowly creeps up over a few minutes back to 2.08v.

Did you wire brush the screw thread??

Wire brushing didn't seem to do anything so I got my dremel with little wire brush attachment. There was a noticeable difference in the screw surface even though it was new. The voltage is hovering around 1.26v currently. I know you're going to tell me that's to low but I'm sure the screw will become contaminated over time.

This all suggests to me that your coolant suspect

May have the answer to that. Firstly the the pH level is spot on. Got some little strips that work great and got a pH level of 7 which I read is the correct level.
But, I'm only topping the tank with water after messing with the screw so it wouldn't have time to mix with the anti freeze. Maybe that's causing an irregular voltage. I'll check again after a run.

Ah no, Ph of 7 is plain water!
Ph of Anti-freeze normally about 10.5, so a 50/50 mix would be about 8.75 ...

These alarms have been designed and developed to work at their best in a 40% mix...
No wonder we could not work out what was going wrong in this particular case....still lesson learnt for the future!

Hi. I am looking to buy a low coolant alarm for my 1996 bongo.....having read the forum I see that buying it from coolantalarm.co.uk is recommended. Do I need to buy a specific model for my bongo or is it a 'one size fits all'? I am going to get my local garage to fit it as I don't trust my diy skills....also someone mentioned discount for bongo fury members....is this correct? Thank you in advance for any replies.....

I'd get one from Haydn - a top chap who helped me out for free even though I didn't buy the alarm off him - our Bongo came already fitted with it.
