Ok thanks for that info. For now fan position 3 works ok now. I will get the fan out at a later stage and try and service it and clean the housing etc. Seems like a spring job given the cold weather now.

What I am struggling to find logic in is why fan pos 3 would cause excess current through motor and yet I have had it on pos 4 for fairly long periods without issue. #-o

I can only think of a resonance at a specific speed causing more friction ? i.e. at Fan pos 3 it might scuff on something. until I see the fan I guess it will be hard to know.

There is a fuse on each resistor, which ever speed setting is selected is the one that pops.

i think how it works is position 4 = less resistance, down to position 1 most resistance, maybe geoff can confirm.

Yup that's the process;

There are 4 resistors and five fuses (one common one)

I appreciate the replies but am still very much #-o

Fan 1,2 and 4 are on a lot for obvious reasons, virtually every time I am in the van either clearing mist or for summer aircon. Why do those speeds not blow any fuses, if there is "resistance" as in friction on the fan bearings I thought that would affect all speeds not just 3. Which incidentally is working very well today on an extended Bongo dry out....shopping run.

I suspect that at somepoint in time the motor was left to stew in water, when it was turned on after this it was in position 3, which blew its fuse, the setting was then moved to a different position after this when the muck had been partially cleared, hence it didn't blow the other positions. Others have reported blowing several positions before the motor has turned sufficiently to get going and clear the muck off. Leaving the muck in the bottom of the motor will only allow the problem to come back more quickly.

That seems like a viable deduction. Will try and see how complicated this is to clean out/service in the spring.
