hold light flashing

can anyone tell me what a flashing hold light means? , it is not picking the right gear when in drive, its an automatic, v6 petrol

Possibly a sign the alternator is in its way out.

As you have already observed it indicates a gearbox fault ..

check gearbox oil level to start with
The diesel have to be done with engine running
Move gears back and forth a few times
Then check level with engine running and in park

The flashing Hold light means that the transmission computer is reporting a fault, see the fact sheets for error codes.
