Clicking Noise from Behind Dashboard

Post by Weeduggy » Thu Aug 21, 2014 6:48 pm

As it says in the title, I have a clicking noise coming from behind the dash board, Sounds like a relay clicking. If i touch the dashboard around the rear windscreen switch i can feel it clicking. Its a pretty rhythmic noise that starts just after you set off and seems to keep going. It did stop a couple of times but now just goes on and on. Everything appears to be working.

Anyone have any ideas.

There's a small fan behind the little vent on the dashboard that draws air past a thermistor that controls the temperature of the climate control. Perhaps it's that? What sort of rate is it clicking at?

Every 3 seconds or so. Continously, no fluctuations.

press the odometer reset button to zero the miles/kms, it may be that, they get knocked when you do the dusting.

No leisure Battery but I'm sure i reset the trip clock prior to this starting so it may well be that. I'll reset again today and see what happens.

Yes this is quite a common fault when you reset the trip, the transfer mech can get jammed and cause a clicking sound as the wheels (speedo) try to turn..

The other clues will be that it only happens when driving & the frequency of clicking will increase with speed. If the main odometer gets stuck that may be a sign that the reading has been 'corrected' in the past.

Well it was the trip clock. Had a look at it today and having driven at least 100 miles previous to this it was sat at 0. Must have stuck when i reset it. Reset it again and all is well.

Actually feel a bit daft now but you live and learn.
