mileometer

Post by jamesythe3rd » Sun Feb 16, 2014 5:09 pm

I bought my bongo in 2012 and fingers crossed, other than a radiator and an alternator, it's been running pretty well. There does however appear to be a problem with my odometer calibration.

I had my suspicions after a holiday to Cornwall later that year as I thought the total mileage to be steep but just put it down to not knowing the distances involved. It was pretty much confirmed following a trip to France last year, my odometer is clocking up at nearly double the actual mileage despite the speedometer showing an accurate speed.

Does anyone know how and where I could get my ODO properly calibrated and further, given that I can confirm my mileage at time of purchase I would be looking to get my bogus miles taken off the clock if possible.

I have gone back to the seller in Dunfermline but they have taken the somewhat disappointing stance of completely ignoring all contact including a personal visit.

Thanks in advance.

J

It's probably reading the distance in km

As indeed do most of them
Unless your speedo goes up to about 180mph, you have a conversion faceplate fitted (which is very common) and your odometer will still read in kilometres 8)

You also need to make sure your MOTs record the fact that the distance on them is in Km's not miles. otherwise the value could be badly affected.

The only way I know to re-calibrate the odometer is to fit a conversion chip. Some people have problems with them affecting other electrics - some don't. Mine has a chip and touch wood no problems in over 6 years now.

I can imagine that you were very happy with the fuel consumption.

Fuel consumption isn't any better, the "miles" per gallon is higher - but unfortunately everywhere is 60% further away.

You could fit a speedo chip but that would mean changing the dial back to standard. Alternatively, track down a GA5R speedo from a Mazda 323 or 626 (I think), set the odometer to the correct miles equivalent of your km readings and then it will be fully in miles.

Current MOT Certificates don't specify if its miles or KM's, it just says odometer reading then the number.

Correct, they use Odometer and History readings on the MOTT Certificate.

It changed at some point between 2012 and 2013:

As Simon says the DEFAULT is Miles - you have to tell them it is km's and they add km's, otherwise the number is meaningless.

Thank you all for the responses, seems so very obvious now, wasn't aware they could overlay the ODO facia like that.

Every day is a school day!
