I've got a noise

Post by Sparticus » Sun Nov 03, 2013 9:10 pm

When it's quiet (no wife or children in the car) I keep hearing a clicking noise over the passenger side, whilst I'm driving. It's an intermittent clicking noise. Sounds like it's coming from the passenger door. My thoughts are that it's a solenoid , don't know why, not really sure what a solenoid sounds like, but that's my guess.
Any thoughts? is there a solenoid for the locking of the door? Could that click every now and again for no apparent reason?

ps
spelt it 'soliniod' to start with, spell check suggested 'Mussolini'!

If it was the central locking solenoid you'd see the lock button moving up and down. I find both our lock buttons tend to rattle a bit when driving, so I find the solution is to lock the doors when we set off. Try getting a passenger to apply pressure to different areas of the door while you're driving to see if they can identify any change in sound.

There is a relay used in the Climate Control mounted above the nearside front wheel ? It bypasses the relay for Max. fan power could it be that operating ?

Thanks, things for me to check.
The locking button is not moving, I had tried locking the doors, didn't make any difference, so it's looking like either the climate control relay or the Italian.

Is it a V6 ? or petrol ? There is a fuel purge solenoid of some sort under the passenger seat that operates occasionally as well.
Its 18-740 here http://lushprojects.com/bongopartsmk2/c ... o=.html#19

On the V6 there is a carbon canister in the engine bay on the passenger side which can click. Something to do with the egr I think. No more data than that. I came across this on the forum ages ago and remembered in case of any unexplained noises.

Hi. I've also got a V6 with LPG and have clicking noises from passenger side.

If you watch the LPG changeover lights, the first click occurs when the engine is at temp for gas running . ( I think its when the flow is switched on to the vapouriser). The second click occurs just before the engine changes over to run on Gas. (Flow to Gas Injectors)

May not be your problem, but this may be the cause if its not continuous clicking

Try switching back to petrol and see if it goes away. On mine, I can just hear the injectors clicking, so you might have a noisy one on the left hand side. A piece of thin wood, or a long screwdriver makes a good stethoscope to listen to different parts of the engine to help trace the source.

The canister mentioned above is the round thing at the bottom of this picture. On the other half's Golf, the solenoid on the canister clicks all the time like a noisy tappet.

Sorry, I've not had a chance to go out in it for the last few days. So I have not had a chance to check any of your suggestion, but come Wednesday, I'll be having a good look.
The click doesn't seem to happen all the time, and usually at least a minute or so apart. I think it's worse over rough ground.

Clicking sound definitely is coming from the passenger door. Happens whether locked or unlocked. Bongo at under-sealers for a few days now, but next stage is to remove door lining and drive round for a bit..
