Post by stpn666 » Thu Oct 17, 2013 3:23 pm

Hi All
I am hoping that someone can offer advice as I turn to the right I sometimes get a clunking noise and the steering appears to go light any suggestions it does not happen all the time?
Cheers

Is it a 4wd? Could be drive couplings if so.

Can you determine roughly where noise is coming from? Could it be one of the universal joints in the steering column which is worn/needs greasing, or something external in the steering / suspension components. Try jacking the front up & turning the wheel from lock to lock & having a goo look & listen.

Anyone remember the Allegro where swivel joints would fail & the whole wheel would fall off!? I seem to recall someone on here had something similar on their Bongo & quite a lot of damage was done. It's probably worth getting to the bottom of the problem before it deteriorates.

oooooh yes  that was when driving was interesting, could'nt even let the steering slip though your hand when coming out of a corner, and sloppy hydroelastic suspension. great fun

was it the one where the wishbone pivot snapped off and the whole lot spun around simon.

i must admit im struggling to come up with something that would knock like described above, could it be that the strut top is loose, there are 3 little studs/nuts and a bearing up there, the nearside tends to seize the bearing then collapse.

or check the mountings on the steering rack to cross member.
