Re: Auto Disco Top
As requested, here are a few pics...
First, the wire I was talking about previously (which doesn't actually feed the upstairs light, it feeds the fluorescent light downstairs). I've just used the existing hole to feed my wire through from my solar charger below, but I'm sure you could cut into the existing cable fairly easily. (Ignore the retro Duracell torch - that's nothing to do with it!)
Here's a wider view, showing the controller box for the lights. It's just wedged inbetween the aluminium extrusion and the roof - seems perfectly secure:
A close-up of the strip of LEDs attached to the side of the aluminium frame:
And the top corner, where it jumps onto the white plastic bit. (I think I didn't go right around the aluminium bit at the top because the plastic bit on the roof obscures it in the centre.) The 5m length fits almost perfectly - I think I only had to snip off about 20cm at the end.
Hope that helps anyone considering doing the same!

Re: Auto Disco Top
Installed mine yesterday. thanks for the idea. My kids love it. To be honest so do I.
I assumed it was 4 colours and that was it. Didn't realise you can make it any colour of the rainbow.
Mine really is a party bus now.
Might get some for the house!!

Re: Auto Disco Top
just to revive this topic. Since my AFT light died, this looks like a good replacement.
Looking at the pictures raises a question though. If I wanted to take a feed
off the cables at the back of the AFT (black cable in picture) how do I then connect
the cable to the white box bit? In the pictures the red and black cable connects
into some blue connecting bits, what are they? Then goes into a black cable and a
connector, what are they? Help appreciated thanks.

Re: Auto Disco Top
The blue connecting bits are just butt connectors to connect the black and red wires, which bring the power up from below, to the two-core black wire which plugs into the white box.
I'm not sure which wires you'd take a feed from, but there must be a 12v feed hidden in the cables which feed the fluorescent light. To connect to them, you could use a couple of tap connectors.
Hope that's of some help!

Brilliant I think I see how it's done. Do the black wires come with the kit?
Or is that just somethig I should buy seperate.

Re: Auto Disco Top
The kit I bought included a very short length of two-core cable with the plug required to power the white LED controller box.
Not sure if they all come with one of these, but you could pick up the plug and wire somewhere like Maplin for not very much money.

Just back from my first trip of the year and yes, the same thing with mine.meek.tv wrote:Just lifted my lid for the first time in a long while and a lot of my LEDs have died. Anyone else having similar trouble?
The section at the front had gone kind of translucent, so I'm wondering if they're not particularly well sealed and a bit of moisture has got in. Can't think of any other reason why they would just die - LEDs are pretty sturdy and the controller still seems to be working.

I'm doing this on my Bongo, will report back when complete.
Anybody any ideas where the wires for the existing light in the AFT run?

Re: Auto Disco Top
I wonder if the problem with these popping is too much power? The controller requires 12v, but it wouldn't be unusual for the battery to be delivering 13.
I am going to replace mine, so I think i'll include a small voltage regulator and see if that helps prolong their life.

Re: Auto Disco Top
Did you source a voltage regulator for these?
I have just bought the same (currently £13.99 on ebay) and thinking about regulating the 12v, but the LEDs draw >=2Amp according to the specs and I can't find a 12v regulator for anything above 1amp

Re: Auto Disco Top
This should do the trick at 4A. Recently bought one to regulate power to my LCD TV although not got round to fitting it yet.

Re: Auto Disco Top
Thanks.
Any suggestions on how to hide/mount such a device?
Would it fit in something like this?
