Dash illumination

Post by hijimhere » Fri Feb 15, 2013 11:39 pm

I have a nice green glow with lights on from my rev counter fuel and temp gauges. However the speedo seems to be lit by a clear bulb and looks odd! The Speedo has the outer MPH and inner KPH. Is this normal? I would prefer the nice green glow if it's a bulb thing.

Mine is the same, (white light on speedo) I had a Jal conversion done, and when I asked Phil at Jal about it he said the bulb may have been changed when they did work on the speedo, I have learned to live with it but I know what you mean, it looks odd. Is your's a Jal conversion by any chance or has someone changed the bulb ?

Mine as green illumination .. well ..that is aside from the stupid white MPH conversion dial .. which is confusing for instant daytime reading .. and worse at a night, as the outer KPH illuminates .. and not the 'stuck on' white MPH inner part of the dial ..

Thanks Jim & Mike - I don't know the history but the speedo is the normal black with white numbers. Can't tell if it is a sticker or if its a a complete speedo? Is there a way to tell if it is a JAL conversion? I have bought another instrument panel, the reason escapes me,
looking at the rear there are 4 types of bulbs. 1. Small black plastic (clear bulb) 2. Small grey plastic (clear bulb) 3. Large black plastic (large clear bulb) 4 Large green plastic (Large green bulb). All of the plastic casings are marked "V - 2 Toshiba". They remind me of the old days where replacing dash light bulb would be necessary from time to time - simply twist & remove. Google show plenty of bulb sellers - far to many to trawl through.

Great shot - the spare cluster I have has two green and two clear large bulbs behind the speedo.

The green bulbs are basically clear ones with a coloured "sheath" over them to give a green hue....
When the bulb gets changed, the "bulb condom" should have been replaced back onto the new bulb..?
With the heat off the filament bulb the green sheath can stick so it may have torn when that bulb was replaced...?

I replaced mine with red leds when one of the backlight bulbs went... You can pull what is basically a "capless wedge" bulb out of those twist in holders...?

no, they aren't for installing in instrument cluster or function switches

the blind switches from the back have a small brown rubber like rectangle - if you pull this from the switch it is about an inch long mostly shrouded with the rubber but has a tiny bulb on the end - its very small and definitely a bulb - I bought a replacement switch from a breaker but the bulb in that was gone........................
