Re: Engine noise + smoke
Hi what engine does the vehicle have....
Re: Engine noise + smoke
Hi Teenmal, its a 1997 2.5 Turbo Diesel.
Re: Engine noise + smoke
Hi It will depend on how the engine is running Now,could be a faulty injector pump, broken cam shaft, faulty valve gear,piston/rings,turbo,etc etc.
How is it running Now.
PS do you use vegetable oil?
Cheers.

Hi, turned it over, still has heavy tapping noise and clouds of smoke.
Re: Engine noise + smoke
No, we don't use veggie oil, just diesel.

Re: Engine noise + smoke
How long have you had the car? Any known history of faults? Is the oil level OK? Coolant level OK? What does the engine look like when you lift the covers - any sign of anything amiss? What colour is the clouds of smoke? etc. etc.
Re: Engine noise + smoke
We bought the van in February, it went in for a service and mot last week, the garage changed the filters and did an
oil change, they checked the coolant and garage said that it was fine., Oh and it does appear to be smoke. we do know that the last owner had cooling system overhaul in August last year, am going to have another look over the engine know see if I can see anything, Thanks for your replies.

Re: Engine noise + smoke
What colour smoke (white/steamy, black etc.). Coolant system overhaul sounds interesting - I hope it was done properly. Did they have to have just a replacement head gasket, or a new head as well. Was the old head pressure tested, was the engine block flatted before mating with new head/gasket. And what had caused the problem. Overheat, due to loss of coolant? or water pump failure? gunged up old radiator? etc. Was the work done by a garage that knows Bongos? Answers to these questions would be useful.Roadtrip wrote:We bought the van in February, it went in for a service and mot last week, the garage changed the filters and did an

Re: Engine noise + smoke
do a compression test, check the timing, or whip the rocker cover off and check the camshaft.
Re: Engine noise + smoke
What's the oil level like in the engine...?

Cheaper by comparison to a race horse...

Re: Engine noise + smoke
Do you know what the work was that was done by the previous owner? Did they have the head replaced? There have been a couple instances on here where recon heads have been fitted and subsequently had a valve drop as some of the clearances where not checked. Hope it's nothing too serious

Re: Engine noise + smoke
my guess would be dropped a valve as it sounds exactly the same as mine did.
