Parking / Proximity Sensor system

Hi all

Our Bongo has two corner sensors, feeding an illustrated & illuminated switch on the dash, used for parking, etc.
They are rectangular, about 30mm x 15mm, with a recessed circular diaphragm in the centre (no smut here, please ).

When it arrived in the UK it worked brilliantly sounding when a car was in front, behind or on either side - and the switch had a plan view which showed which side the nearby item was!
It also sensed passing pedestrians, large dogs, etc .

As far as I can assess, it is a Mazda OE accessory system. However, I have never seen another Bongo with it fitted

Sadly, it is no longer working . I know that on other/lesser cars' systems, the sensors are the weakest link, so I would like to source a couple of new or pre-enjoyed items!!

Has anybody had experience with the system , and has any member got a spare sensor lurking ?

I have a factory system fitted ....4 x sensors in the rear bumper and 1 x sensor on the front passenger corner....a screen on the dash and a repeater screen in the rear roof you can see in the rear view mirror when reverse is selected.

Interesting, but your Bongo looks like a later model (ours is 1997/ R-reg).
Your system sounds much more comprehensive, too!

Only the two sensors in total.

I think you'll find the Mazda fitted Corner Sensor system is as Haydn describes with two displays one on the Dashboard and the other visible in the Rear mirror, see below;

and the wiring looms are as in the diagram below;

Yep, you're right.

That means that our system must be a Japanese aftermarket kit - which will be even more difficult to find spares for

Oh well, we'll have to keep our eyes open wider from now on

I did have a look around for spare sensors when we first got our Bongo, as I wanted to add a couple to the Thule Box mounted on the tow-bar - no luck Ended up making the rear two sensors extendable on plugs and move them from the Bumper to the Box when we fit it during the summer. I think the only source is likely to be someone Breaking a vehicle which has them fitted...

Personally, I would get a new kit and replace the lot. I've bought several sets of eBay for about £15 - £20 and always found them to be very reliable and easy to fit. Typically, you get 4 sensors (and a hole saw for the cut out) and a display with coloured LEDs to indicate distance and a readout to show the actual distance. There is an optional beeper which can be used with or without the display. Very simple to fit: drill 4 holes, push sensors thru and run the wires in thru the grommet behind the rear light clusters. Control box is wired in to the back of the reversing light and sits behind one of the rear side panels. Either run the display to the front of the van, or mount it inside the opening for the tailgate like the one Geoff has shown. The other good thing about these kits is that they usually can be ordered with a range of different colour sensors, so you could get silver, black, of whatever colour bumper you have.

I've got 2 sets waiting to go on the Volvo (front and back) for when the weather gets a bit warmer.
