2 Litre Starting

Our 2 litre Bongo is getting more reluctant to start. The present trick is to turn the switch to start and turn the engine over for a bit until it tries to start, then switch off and repeat, normally it then starts. It is then a bit sluggish until it reaches running temeperature when it behaves fine. Any subsequent starts during the day are fine.

Any suggestions other than buy a diesel Bongo

Sounds to me like the choke not working. My 2L starts on the first turnover every time, the method I use is to press accelerator once to set the choke then keep off the pedal when turning the key. I did have a starting problem when cold (during summer) but that was a battery issue which I'm sure you've checked.

Thought they disappeared years ago - pre fuel injection

Usually the ECU tells the injections system that it is cold ... so more fuel gets injected to give a richer mixture until things warm up..

One reason is maybe the temperature sensor is faulty and not sending the right info ..??

It might be worthwhile checking the operation of the choke, and cleaning the choke sensor plug.

Usually injected engines do not have a choke ..the ECU tells the injections system that it is cold ... so more fuel gets injected to give a richer mixture until things warm up..

One reason is maybe the temperature sensor is faulty and not sending the right info ..??

Hi on these old vehicles it is called the Building Choke.This is the one on a v6.

I must admit I am confused between what looks like a Choke and is called a Throttle (with a Throttle Position Sensor - TPS) on modern engines!

My 2.0 sometimes wanders up from 800rpm to 1200rpm. Then back down. Im looking for the sensor as well.

The sencer numbers are ..18-840c ...... and 18-510 .. dunno where they are situtaed ... I would check around the water pump area ..
