What's Wrong With This Picture?

Post by Ian » Mon Aug 29, 2011 12:37 pm

Thanks to Ady (Northern Bongolow) for all his help over the weekend =D> . He spotted a problem straight away that still needs to be resolved. So now let's see how good you lot are.......I wonder if any of you engine experts can spot what is wrong with this photo?

Lots of soot above the exhaust manifold between cylinders 1 and 2?

Not the right answer! However, the heat shield disintegrated when removed, and I need to find a new one quick before Marianne's big end gets any hotter...........

Any other guesses?

That manifold is different to mine - the take-off at the back, which looks like a blanked EGR take-off is a flanged joint. On mine (1997) the EGR outlet is a big pipe with a threaded fitting, like a big plumbing fitting.

Is it a Bongo manifold?

Yup, that's the bit I'm on about.

Is it possibly a ranger manifold?

Yes, well done Dave, you win. =D> Send a stamped addressed envelope and I will send you a fridge magnet....

It is indeed a non-Bongo manifold, but it seems to work OK, and gets REALLY hot (as Marianne will attest). The problem is, whoever fitted it, it has ended up very close to the large intake hose, which has melted! So i'm trying to track down a (flat) manifold which has the EGR pipe, and then get a new inlet hose fitted, all by the time I drive down to Looe.

And well spotted Steve, it is an AMC head, but no problems experienced with that either.

the manifold and possibly the turbo is off a wle7 which has the egr flange on the wrong side, however this has been blanked off but is a large lump of cast that is too near the rear air pipe,it has melted the plastic pipe and sucked the heat shield foil into the pipe,it didnt block the pipe but ended up a melted blob of the 2 mixed with a large hole for the air to be allowed in bypassing the airfilter etc.
the picture shows the get you home bodge done to the pipe to get ian home, but is only a temp job.

thanks to simon for the offer of help supplying the parts ian needs.
