Removed EGR,Can i Re-use the Solenoids??

Post by timmyt » Wed Jul 06, 2011 8:54 pm

Hi,
After rebuilding my bongo after suffering cracked head i decided to completely remove and blank the egr system.
Ill post more on the whole rebuild shortly but what im wondering for now is can i re-use the back two solenoids in place of the front fast idle ones??
The reason i ask is A) Both the stubs are snapped on the front two #-o and B)Ill always have a spare if either of the fronts fail
Or are they only good for the skip?

Thanks

I'm not entirely sure...? But, i seem to remember Kirsty (missfixit) replace at least the most forward one when her's packed up with an egr solenoid. (I think it has a white dot?) That switches idle with the AC...

Now i'm not sure if the block/electrical connectors are the same? but you could always change the connectors on the end off the idle solenoid loom for the corresponding egr solenoid connection block..?

Is it just the one solenoid with the stubs broken??

I reused one of the egr solenoids as a fast idle one, the pipe work location was slightly different from memory & I had to splice in the egr electrical connector using spade female connectors, but it did the job fine until I happened across some proper job spares (bits of Harry's bongo IIRC  ) don't bin them, save the electrical connectors too :D
There may be an old thread with pics lurking somewhere if it hasn't been overenthusiastically pruned.

I have eliminated the whole/entire EGR system. Damping idle on the diesel version was easy by rerouting the vaccum line directly to the throttle dampener on the injector pump.

It all works just fine 8) !

to fix the stubs, fit a roll pin into the hole, get the next size up roll pin then push over the first then surround the stub with epoxy glue. this should give you the correct size stub for the pipe to fit onto.
leave room for the pipe to go on.and make sure the slots in the roll pins are missaligned and air/vac tight.
sorted,

Hi,Thanks for the tip!
For now though iv just managed to bodge a repair [-o<
Where the stub was snapped flush to the solenoid (the vertical stubs) i very carefully managed to file/trim it down to the base as it actually sits against the main body of the solenoid, after removing the excess plastic i slightly flattened one side of some silicone vacuum hose and managed to get a very tight fit over the small stub that i formed :D
Just waiting for the sealant that i generousy covered it all with to dry and will give it a test, fingers crossed it will work [-o<
