No Power to Fans

Post by PisceanJoy » Wed Jun 01, 2011 1:31 pm

One of my alarms went off as I was starting off to go to a festival
Luckily I was near the garage
They have checked and the fans aren't working
Its not the fuses and they say they don't think its the wiring
They don't think they have come across this before
has anyone got any ideas as to what it could be?
Unfortunately unless its something simple (which it doesn't seem to be) they can't delve deeper till friday which means I'll miss the Festival
So any help will be appreciated

dont they go throught the relays located in front/below the main battery? do the fans work if the apply power directly?

A quick check you could make is to turn the Air Conditioning on (if you have it) that forces the Fans on, that will prove that the Fans and the relays are OK or not, if they do come on then it would suggest that perhaps the fault is back towards the ECU and temperature sensors (most likely) if they don't come on then it would point towards the Fans, relays and fuses the fuses are;

the relays are B6-01, B6-02 & B6-03 see top lefthand side;

In that case provided all three fuses are OK, try swapping B6-02 relay with the B6-01 relay, that may allow the Fans to come on at the lowest speed setting, if that happens you may find that they still don't work when a higher speed is requested however it would give you some cooling, not sure that I would want to drive to far however without knowing that the faster fan speeds are available when needed, especially when you stop after a run.

Ah OK, the relays are easy to get at and very simple to swap however, just behind the offside headlight, 2 black oblong plastic boxes, you want the one closest to the headlight, reach down on the righthand side and there is a simple plastic catch that needs to be pulled out a little, top of the box will then lift away. Inside three black cubes, swap the centre and right hand one, just pull straight up to remove and push back down to insert. The get back inside turn on Ignition and turn on the Air Con, with luck the fans will be turning when you look again.

Glad they sorted it, always a pain when two faults exist :-(

Nice one Joy, glad they got there, looks like they've learnt a bit more about the bongo & its cooling system too :wink: Does that mean the AC gas needs topping up too, if switching that on didn't activate the fans?
Always better to actually disconnect the engine temp or ac switch to see if the fans are working.

Needs using regularly to maintain the seals, at least once a month even during the winter. If you don't already, use it to help demist the windows, much quicker :wink:
