years ago when delivering consentrated caustic in my tanker i quickly learned that caustic attacks and in fact eats alluminium.
imagine my surprise when doing tests on how to chemical flush an old sludged up but not leaking coolant radiator i poured into the removed radiator a caustic water mix, i knew that lots of heat would be produced in the following reaction, but what did i forget?? you guessed it,the mix ate the rad in approx 20 mins.
what lessons have you learn and then forget.

Aw so unintentionally funny, lol, I had to order a new rad today as mine is full of crud and sprung a big leak which I hope is the cause of all the problems I have had. Got a brand new one, aluminium cored 2 year warranty, boxed etc, delivered all for £111.00, will arrive Tuesday for fitting..all I need now is a new bloody left arm to drive the bongo with, lol. Got it from a company called budget rads, nice helpful chap to be fair, got a phone number if anyone needs it.

Crikey - very easily done, a mistake like that. I wouldn't have made the connection I suspect, even though the chemist in me ought to remember. Makes you wonder what exactly the recommended stuff uses to do the job

Oops! When I saw your intentions I thought it was a bit drastic, but had no idea it would dissolve the alloy

- bad luck/memory

Looks like Mike's plan of cutting up was the best idea!
BTW how badly sludged was it?

It got replaced when the head went on ours as a precaution as the head failure was due to a mega hose leak.
Either the overheat must have or caused it to sludge up or the sludge help contribute to the head failure i.e. ran too hot for a while?
