Check all the belts first, a screech is quite often a drive belt slipping.

I do take it that you had the engine running when you say the coolant wasn't moving. If so I'd go with the water pump, but I ain't no expert.

Thanks Alan  not true but had my fair share of problems!
Well I have not had much to do with the water pump, Andy have you checked the belts as suggested?
When you opened up the bleed pipe, did you not get any water flow, I wonder if you may have a blockage somewhere, perhaps the radiator needs a flush out. When I had my overheating problems I Flushed and better flushed the radiator, replaced the thermostat, the radiator cap, and a dodgy looking hose. My old thermostat was a little slow to open, my waterpump is a little noisy, but I was told it only sloshes a little water about, by a fellow in the know! I am sure someone will tell me the opposite. I have no experience of removing the waterpump, but sure other members will be able to help you. good luck
