I suppose we could add the "spare" worm where people replace the skinny with a full-size spare - but if you're running regulation sized tyres front & rear your spare clearly only suits one axle, so say you get a puncture on the other axle, fit the spare which isn't the right size, and then have a major incident on your way home......

What a coincidence, I was going to ask what size spare to get. I recently joined the ranks of Bongo owner and was checking the spare wheel out today, just to see what sort was there. It turned out to be a skinny spare and after reading the recomendations on dumping these and replacing with a full size spare I thought I would do that......but what size? The Bongo is 1995 2WD with full side conversion and 195 front tyres with 215 rears, so what size spare do I get? My thought was a 195 as I would have thought it best to keep the same size tyres on the front so as not to get any steering problems but different sizes on the rear wouldn't create many problems as a get home solution. Is my thinking correct, ignoring any insurance doubts for the moment as you would have the same problem using the factory supplied skinny......or would you?

I don't seem like a total nerd, but the post a few above mistakes "weight" and "mass". The arithmetic above assumes the vehicle is stationary. - of course, they aren't, the bongo's are bongo'ing along into and out of dips and the tyres take pressure round corners.

example 1:
entering a dip - like the ones on the A93 near spittal of glenshee. the bongo will "weigh" 1.3 times its mass as it hits the bottom of the dip. the tyres not only are taking mass x gravity (but are also got the upwards acceleration of hitting he upswing in the road). If you manage to get the bongo off the ground, or are travelling faster, then the forces increase dramatically! For the non-rally drivers: hitting a square edged sleeping policeman, or kerb, at 30mph may also exert a similar force on the tyre,

example 2:
moose avoidance manoeuvre; basically, two outside cornering tyres will be taking 75% of the weight loading of the vehicle.

I'd agree with your thinking, making sure the load & speed rating is up to par - whatever par is The difference in the rolling circumference front & rear should be negligable anyway.

I'm going for the 215 for my spare! for 2 reasons:
1: I'd much rather have a spare over-rated tyre than an under-rated tyre.
2: you are much, much more likely to get a rear puncture because nails etc are flipped up by the front tyres.

however,
+ if you live in somewhere like milton keynes. get a front, because you are going to wear out the front left tyre very quickly, so at least you have another tyre to even out the wear!

215 is not the rating, it's the width, so a 195 is not "underrated", it depends on what rating 195 you get

is this the pedantry corner! clearly the "tyre rating" (usually a single letter depicting max speed rating) and the "width" (in mm) are different and not to be confused.

I think most would prefer width over speed anyway.
