Hello. :) This question has been asked a few times recently (prob due to the weather and salt :) ). If you use waxoyl and underseal to 'search' you get some discussions that may be useful to you. SEE THIS LINK
If you don't get any recommendations for your area, you could try asking in your regional section.

i know rust protection will pay for its self in the long run but this is still alot of money to us eh.
may be if we both agree to use rustmaster he could do it a bit cheaper.

Hi there,

I can vouch for rustmaster, they did a good job on my car 2-3 years ago. Still looks good so lasting well.

Some pics here:

I did the same as Andy but with an outfit near to me. BUT, if money is tight, I think it is possible to get a perfectly good done in plain waxoyl if you can find a respectable outfit to do it for your. Key aspects are thorough cleaning off, thorough drying, making relevant body parts are removed for good access to interior, using a good lance sprayer to get into distan recesses. Finally, with waxoyl I'm advised you need to have it redone annually in external areas prone to abrasion from road spray and grit, and this is an annual cost of around £50 (though I think you could DIY it) and an inconvenience. You might get a good garage job done for £200-£250 or thereabouts being realisitic and depending which part of UK you are in (some peeps - in the North? - have had good jobs done much cheaper than that but I wouldn't expect it as the norm)

I have had Freda for just over a year now, As a condition of sale at a reputable garage I was

told it's been wax oiled, I'm not sure if they have done it at all, how would I check.

If it looks like bare / zinc plated looking metal on the floor pans etc. underneath, probably with some surface rust on it, then it most likely hasn't been done anywhere, as those are the easiest areas to impress a customer by doing even though they are not the most important. However, even if that area is done, waxoyling is a job that - done well - requires diligence and time (prepping, drying off prior to spraying, getting iinto nooks and crannies). Fresh waxoyl should be a bit soft, even sticky if no dirt/dust has got on it to dry the surface.

My suspicion is that dealers know that 'has been waxoyled' helps reassure customers and get a sale. Whether they do the job diligently depends very much on the dealer. And for all of them time is money so....

Thats my thoughts anyway!

Freda is at the MOT testers today and whilst on the ramp i'll have a look, I'll expect to be
disappointed.

I will post some photos/info

If it's been waxoyled you'll be able to see/feel the waxy coating, not bare metal. As you're on a ramp you'll find it easy to see exactly where it's been done... I have seen some that thought they had a full waxoyl but have just been waxoyled at the edges, about as much as you'd see/feel when kneeling down.

Waxoyl does have the ability to 'creep' and reseal small gaps, but sometimes (not always) needs an annual top up... I guess it depends on how much use the vehicle gets - how much muck hits the waxoyl coating.

..and to put it in perspective, I'm finding that after 3 years (as Chassis Clean predicted) even the expensive Dinitrol job is starting to flake a little in my rear wheel arches so will need a little attention (probably DIY waxoyl will do to be honest)

Hi,

With the waxoyl there are 2 types (other than the 2 colours). The more common type is the one available from halfords etc, places like rustmaster and beforenafter use a slightly different type only available to specialists.

Also rustmaster offers a free inspection and touch up service, it's detailed on their website so if you think it's starting to come off you can get it checked and retreated.

I'm of the understanding that the professional type is more durable and should need less touching up.

Mike, maybe worth checking with your guys if they offer a similar service? You never know, could save you some hassle.

Good point - I'll check. It'd be 5 secs work for them to do as they have the gear, the work is minimal and v. accessible.

Well, it appears from an inspection on the ramp that the wax oil hasn't been done.

I have attached some photos for freda's underside
