Of course the more you try to find out about this, the more murky it becomes.
According to our HSE advisor there is no particular regulation regaring storing diesel at home. Due , I presume to it's higher flashpoint vis-a-vis petrol. However, the work DGSA says that transportation IS covered by legislation and that 10Litre containers are the 'advised' volume. There seems to be no regulated colour for containers.

Thank you rita....never even thought of them. Odd, since I worked for them a while back
They said, as Mr Scanner confirmed, that 20L in a metal can (any colour) is fine. But that was not a written statement. Though I believe in Scotland verbal statements may be contractual..........................right, off to the Shell garage.

Re: Twenty litre jerry can
The carriage regulations only came in in 2004
http://www.hse.gov.uk/cdg/pdf/diesel.pdf and I would guess are only (formally) applicable in a commercial environment.
I'm not sure about the "metal" container bit - is that new as well? If so a lot of "cans" sold for diesel, as well as many vehicle fuel tanks are illegal.
You don't even need metal for petrol

Re: Twenty litre jerry can
Doesn't apply to personal use then.Regulation 3(6)(a) [ADR 1.1.3.1(c)]:
The regulations do not apply to diesel in packages not exceeding 450 litres per package and not exceeding 1,000 litres in total, provided the diesel is intended to be used by the person carrying it at the final destination, however, if the carrier is delivering the diesel for use by someone else the consignment is not exempt from the requirements.
Re: Twenty litre jerry can
Is having a 10-20L Jerry of petrol a bad idea then? Vapours etc.?
For longer drives it’d be nice to know you didn’t have to stop and fill up in expensive motorway services.
These look awfully expensive compared to a green plastic job but I’m sold by the marketing
