Twenty litre jerry can

...quick question.

Are these ok in most garages? I have a couple of diesels so it would be handy, but I ain't buying one if it causes hassle at the forecourt.

Diesel is not subject to the Petroleum Act it only applies to "Petroleum Spirit" - Petrol to you and me. The signs on the forecourt should actually only refer to "petrol" or "petroleum spirit" anything else and they are illegal.

So there are no restrictions on buying diesel (well you can't just put it in a carrier bag of course) but any secure sealed container of almost any size is OK and quite legal.

If anybody tries to tell you otherwise tell them to "go off and read the Act" or words to that effect.

Diesel is so much safer than that awful smelly, toxic, explosive stuff.

PS I used to run a filling station and my son still does.

Just don't use any you bought at the height of summer in the depths of winter, as it is different stuff then and could "gel" under extreme conditions.

In short it contains anti-gelling additives which saves having to add a small amount of petrol/paraffin or light a fire under the fuel tank (yes lorry drivers used to do just that!) read here http://trucknetuk.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=53736.

I believe in some places (parts of Canada anyway) they leave the truck engine running constantly, (like overnight) to stop it from freezing up.

If you've ever watched the programme " Ice road truckers" you'll have noticed that the engines in trucks during sub-zero temps once started cannot be switched off again (apart from servicing in a heated workshop) So a healthy engine is likely to run for months without being switched off.

You are correct of course.... (strictly speaking) But the reality is that the forecourt attendant doesn't HAVE to sell you anything... If that particular person isn't happy with what you are dispensing the diesel into, then they'll shut off the pump, simple as that. I've had this done on me on 3 occasions, (after they spotted me adding veg oil into the tank AWAY from the pump) Then simply not switched on the pump to dispense the fuel, saying I'd added an unknown additive to MY fuel on THEIR forecourt!

I used to mix my veg oil & diesel in two 20 litre Jerry cans in the boot of my estate car, i had to "sneak" the diesel into the cans, i used to pretend to be filling up my car on the "blind side", when in fact i was filling the jerry cans in the boot.

Other people filling up their cars would actually "grass" on me (especially taxi drivers), then it was pump switched off time!

I took in a print out of the customs and excise sheet, i may as well have produced some second hand toilet paper for all it was worth... Bottom line? If they aren't happy with what you are dispensing whatever fuel into, they'll simply switch off the pump.

You're quite correct but that is simply their ignorance/contrariness and my response is to go elsewhere. If I'm ever questioned I just say it's for a JCB or mini-digger on site and ask THEM what the problem is as I'm not buying petrol, just diesel and such a container is legal for that. But I haven't had that happen for years. I find it best to use real filling stations though, not amateurs like Tesco/Asda etc., who use people who don't really know the rules as they were probably on an ordinary check-out the day before.
Shell is better (IMHO) and down here noticeably cheaper than RipoffCo.

"Screwfix" sell a 10 litre version in red identical in function and shape to the old army ones.
I have 4 and they are much more convenient and lighter than the 20 litre ones and I never
have any bother filling them up, even with petrol - for the garden machinery.

Exactly

They are told they mustn't let people have "petrol" in any thing other than the green plastic cans and they are the sort of people who don't know the difference between petrol and diesel.

Ever noticed that it is only the supermarkets (esp. Tesco) that have signs to "Petrol" and "Petrol station" instead of to "Fuel" and "Filling station".
