or Phone them and see what they say, they may agree for a local garage to look at a stat for you.
then they know that there is a problem and their reaction should give a clue as to if they already know about it.
but get a good garage to do it that knows how to bleed it properly hopefully one that the seller knows of

ok i' spoke to mike at wheelquick tonight, he recons that the 2l petrols do run VERY cold (haydn reckons so too) but as piece of mind he's going to put a new stat in on monday morning and check it over. I have no idea if i have a stat in or not at the moment but i'll keep you posted....
my case maybe a little different from yours as you say your temp gauge doesnt move. if i leave mine just ticking over it just stays at the 11 oclock position for as long as you like, when i start to drive and get some air flowing it drops back down to the 'c'...

Hi guys, can anyone help out with my similar problem.....
Ive had my Ford Freda 2.5 TD for a year now, its in fantastic condition, have been all over in it problem free, however whilst going to work this morning (8-9 mile trip stop start traffic) I noticed the temp gauge rising, usually gets warm within 2-3 miles and stops at the 11 o-clock ish position and never moves from there.
It actually rose to around 1 o-clock of the gauge position by the time I arrived at work.
Coming home it was ok for first 5-6 miles then fairly rapidly rose very near the H mark on the gauge by the time I got home.
I also lost the heating though the vehicle ventilation system, blowing luke warm on full H position.
Ive spoken to a couple of local garages who dont know the system and havent really worked on a Bongo, both say the first port of call would be to pressure test the system.
My initial thoughts were:- Thermostat, Water-pump, blockage within the coolant system????
I will order a thermostat and put that in just for the sake of it, does anyone have access to a link to carry out this procedure and anything in particular to look out for........?

Any update ? I have had mine for a month now and it heats up fine within about 3 miles and the heater is quite hot. I run the control for the heating in the middle of the dial which is fine. Temp guage runs at just below 11 - 0 - clock. One thing to really look out for on the 2 ltr is tappet noise as they are prone to oil gallery blockage especially if they were stood on the dock for some time. If you've got an airlock, it's there for a reason, probably a leak, have you checked the coolant level? If it's low get it topped up & bled properly & figure out where it's gone. As Mike said, don't risk it until it's sorted, lift the seats, check all the hoses, check the rad, etc. There's a list of bongo friendly garages in the members area.
If you're gauge is standard & unmodified, it will only move once it's getting VERY hot, the gauge can be undamped to actuall tell you what's going on by getting in with a soldering iron courtesy of instructions available from Haydn Callow (coolant level alarm while you're at it?) on here, or by fitting a Mason Alarm - http://www.townace.plus.com/ie/ietemga2.htm

mine turned out to be a dodgy stat, wheelquick put a new one in and it has been working 100% as normal for the last 7 days.... so it seems it has done the trick... the stat is your first port of call...

How interesting - it suggests the stat may have failed in the open position. Agree Mike - but it would be nice to know.

Wheelquick are renowned for being pretty genned up on Bongos so they will probably be able to tell you if it was STUCK OPEN.

the stat had deffo failed in the open position!!!... but like i said in the other thread, mike at wheelquick has seen a few like this now and thinks it could have been 'made' to do it in the hot japanese summers???.... anyway mine's been 100% since mike put in the stat last monday.... 
after speeking with a machanic friend of mine he says he also has seen them fail open not because they have been made to but because they a patten parts that are made of inferior metal and the valve 'disc' warps under the heat and stops them closeing 100% which is basicly what the old stat in my bongo looked like....

Is this just on the 2litre? It would be great to have, on Steves coolant mastersheet, brief summary of symptoms for situations where:
1) System is permantely open/flowing (thermostat removal/modification/open failure)
2) System flow partially or fully stopped (thermostat fails closed, rad. partically blocked etc.)
3) (trickier this one - are there well defined symptoms?)) coolant flow reduced by water pump impairment/failure
...along with classic ones due to coolant loss or air in system etc. A sort of fault finding matrix
