I'll try and answer part of your question/s as best I can. I recently fitted the temp alarm gismo to my bongo and the 'true' reading on the temp gauge was about 1mm before the 'H'. Having read other peoples posts that it should read approx' the 1 o'clock position (the thermostat opens at 80 deg c so I suppose this position equates to about the same) mine was obviously reading way too high. Haydon had said in one of his posts to try the thermostat if nothing else is obviously wrong and it's cheaper than assuming a blocked radiator.

So I changed the thermostat, hey presto, engine now running at approx' 1 o'clock position or a full 1CM!! from the 'H' on the gauge during everyday runnning. Quite a difference!

I have my alarm set on 4.5 and so far had no alarms since changing the thermostat! :D

I asked the same question - see the following for replies:

My TM2 is currently set at 115 and the engine sounds fine (the sensor cable is attached at the front end of the block, passenger side-thats left in UK)

The above thread has someone with theirs set at 123

That is no longer the recommended place to locate the sensor for the TM-2...It is close to the exaust and in no way reflects the coolant temp....for some time now we have been suggesting it is fitted to one of the tapped holes on the rear of the head ---to get at this point, pull back the bit of carpet between the seats (at the rear) and remove the large cover.....you can then see the correct holes....once this is done your TM-2 should be around 90 for normal driving and 100 if towing. This is pretty close to the coolant temp

Yes just like mine--it hovers around 88/90 normal driving--but towing caravan (last week) reached 95 max mainly Motorway driving--mine is set at 102
hope that helps.
