Please help me identify my mystery left over bolt!!!

Post by radrob » Sat Sep 19, 2009 8:21 pm

Guys after the Bongo experience from hell which i shall unload another time, my second cylinder head change, this time with new piston has left me with a bolt that was labelled but the writing faded in the sun. I havent got a clue where it goes any suggestions please.
It is about 80mm long and with a length of plain shank, without any markings on head etc, It looks clean like it lives in a clean zone and has slightly grubby end threads as if the very end protruded. I have enclosed a piccie. The beast newly assembled seems to run without it but left-overs are always a cause for concern. PS any advice on cylinder heads give me a yell I`m sadly quite aquainted with the task.
Jeeze how do I upload a piccy?
Regards
Rob

looks like a bolt from inside the car, it's not from around the gear shift or engine cover is it? :D

sure its not a head bolt assuming you used new ones?

just saw the 80 mm

in that case reminds me of bolt holds the gear shift on

Thanks for the advice so far. It's not a within engine bolt and doesn't hold the manual gearstick assy on or the big cross engine panel it seems too long the type of thing that would secure a clamp. I am mostly clueless.

Did you have the alternator off? The bolt looks like one of the few different ones used on the alt....I think.

The alternator was only loosened and the bolt seems too clean but I'll double check.

It must be the Nut and Bolt Fairies,

The little blighters come along when you are doing a job like this and drop an extra in just to confuse you

I had an old Moped, and everytime I took the gearbox to bits I always ended up with a spare circlip left over

Hurrah the mystery is over and Hussain has a home!! He fits through the lower part of the rear cam cover plate, just above the lower cam pulley and needn`t have been removed hence missing him on the refit. I did have to remove the cam cover again but I`ll sleep soundly. Touch wood after two months of dead bongo it seems to be running beautifully - touch wood again etc.
The end threads that looked grubby protrude just next to the fuel pump so I was on the right line. Thanks to everyone who took time out to try and help me It was very much appreciated. The EBay cowboy who sold me the crap cylinder head still hasn`t collected the mal-machined heap but I`m hoping the whole saga will end well.
Keep on rollin.
