If your lucky you might be able to clean the contacts a little to get you going for now...it worked for me.

Mine worked for a couple of weeks by giving the starter a few gentle taps with a hammer before giving up totally, by which time the contacts & plunger had arrived, dead easy job to do - about half an hour from lifting the drivers seat to trouble free starting.
Check the voltage at the starter, just in case, even jump starting sometimes doesn't make proper contact.
You can't polish a turd - but you can roll it in glitter.

all sorted :D thanks to everyone who replied, turn out that when the recovery lorry turned up it started on his booster pack first time. turns out the alternator had stopped work so there was enough power to light up the dash but not to turn it over. got it recovered to discount trucks. phone to see if the van had turned up only to be told by fred it's finish and ready for collection now how's that for service. big thanks to gerry and fred I can now go on holiday tonight :D
