Ooh me ball joints are aching.

Post by Bongoing Mad » Tue Jul 07, 2009 10:12 pm

So I need two new ones so the garage says, trouble is the parts places are saying I need the wishbone thingy as well
which costs £139 each all in.
People in past posts have said they have just managed to fit the ball joint itself to the wishbone, but I cant find anwhere that sells them on their own. :-k
Any advice greatfully recieved.

I seem to remember than you need a press to fit them to the wishbone :?

Do you think your average garage might have one of these presses?

All good garages used to have the skills to do all this sort of engineering stuff, Not so sure now though. I reckon that they are few and far between. :(

It would be nice and most sensible to use a press but it is possible to go the DIY route and use a hammer, drift and tube carefully as I have done, provided you tap firmly around the joint evenly to get it to go in squarely so it does not bind on the way in. Just ensure you use a drift or tube to protect vital surfaces and the rubber part. I used a few inches of scaffhold tube to hit the wish bone down over the joint supported on a stout metal support to the ground, as I said in my posts elsewhere on this topic I replaced mine in situ on the car saving the removal of the wishbone. A good warm up of the surrounding wishbone arm with a hot air gun or blow lamp will help immesurably too. Wish I had taken photos when recently doing mine now to illustrate how i did it.... if you need greater detail of the diy route please let me know.

Its great when the knocking goes, makes you wish you had done it sooner. I had a creaky drop link that eluded me for weeks, I just couldnt trace where it was coming from as the sound seemed to come from all directions, I found it by holding it while the car was being rocked and felt some slight roughness thats all........its suprising how easily these things get on your nerves.
