small nipple?

Post by Bongo.Baz.tard » Sat Jun 27, 2009 3:27 pm

Right , that got your attention,
First off A big hello to you all, i've been relatively BONGO trouble free, so ain't been around that much . SORRY.
Tho i've had the odd look now and again  , But that's another story.
I thought i had a small coolant leak in the small hose on the left as you look from the front, at the conection at the bottom of the radiator. Looked like the pipe or possibbly the radiator connection.
so i thought all i had to do was pull off the pipe and cut it back. Just assumed coolant would come out .
No its tranny or gear oil, cut it back and replaced hose.
IT was def leaking coolant so i assume its the radiator.
I take it this is just some sort of gear oil cooler. Or is it the engine oil cooler?
I assume i can just take the radiator out and have it repaired.
I'D appreciate any imput on this cause, im happy to follow in the footsteps of those who know as opposed to leading blindly from the front.

NOW FOR MY NIPPLE PROBLEM.
While I was doing this I took off the air ducting above the radiator , TO SEE COOLANT LEAKING FROM THIS NIPPLE ON THE RADIATOR CAP HOUSING.
There was no hose attatched and it is not blanked off.
Question is should this be blanked off (i'm thinking this could be a radiator off a ranger? so slightly different).
Or should there be a hose attatched and where is it?
Worst thing is it's Saturday and if you can still afford to put diesel in the bongo you'll all be out.

looks like you have the non standard rad, if its the metal top type rather than the plastic mazda one, then the pipe needs to be blocked off, I used a small piece of hose with a jubille clip holding it on, then blacked off the other end using a small socket extension peice, and jubille clipped that in place.

I would expect that its just dripping down, when i replaced my old rad everything was all fine, got to york at a local meet, showed off my new rad to someone who also had a weeping top plastic bit, as I had already told them that mine was all metal, anyway noticed that there was a slight drip from the nipple/pipe, so i took the rad cap off to see what was going on, anyway to cut a long story short, by the time I packed up sunday day time, there was a bit of a pool of coolant under the rad, which was running down the rad and down the oil cooler.

just bung it off and check to see if its still leeking, but I would put my last quid that it was just dripping down it.

Thanks again, gonna just do as you said. I will probably flush then fill the system soon . But do ya think i should bleed the system anyway.

did the expansion tank get anywhere past the minimum mark?, depends how much coolant was lost but no harm in bleeding it anyway and if your confident about it.

Pipe on top of rad, used an internal hose from a washing machine from the inlet value to the soap drawer a screw inserted and clipped as seen below.

been like that for a good while now with no problems apart from the rad fins starting to split. ( Picture in another topic)

As for the gear oil, I can't help as mine's a manual so it's not in used.

Yeah I was gonna bleed it then spent half an hour looking at the dif oil pipe to radiator and decided that the leak was def at the conection. So out came the radiator and off we go, tho two of the fan bolts decided to stay with the radiator well half of them  ( one from each fan) IM HOPING 3 BOLTS WILL BE SURFICE? .
Raidiator guy says he couldn't find a leak but could be because it wasn't hot  I've got him to braise both oil feeds and blank off the top £25. He wasn't too keen to do the top blanking as he said he didn't like modifying rads. Gentle persuasion ain't an option if i'm paying .so I'll pick it up tomorrow job done. I'M TRYING to justify this by telling myself that its good to get your radiator off cause now you can flush it and have a crack at the BLACK ART of bongo coolant bleeding . Which I've BEEN DYING TO TRY #-o .
Might replace a hose or two if money and time permit.
Once again thanks for the speedy replies.

Of course, the only time the pipe bodge would leak is if the system overheated enough to raise the pressure higher than the cap blow pressure....... :?
