lubricate side door?

what is the best way to lubricate the side door? i now live very close to the beach, great but, the sand gets everywhere!

i use the spray white grease on mine and its great no probs
the good thing is you get a small thin knozzle for it so you can get it right into the small bits without and spray getting everywhere.

I wonder if it would be a good idea to flush any trapped sand (i.e. stuck in the grease) out also so it doesn't do its abrasive thing on the runner mechanism. I guess that would mean cleaning it all up with a solvent like white spirit, maybe using a paintbrush then a cloth to clean it all off (watch out you don't get sand scratching the pintwork in the process). Then relubricate the mechanism.

The above suggestion could be OTT though - lets see what others say.

I use the spray grease too at £1.00 a can in the good old pounshops, lol, also use a squirt of maintenance spray now and again, the stuff used on bikes not wd40 which evaporates almost immeadiately. Every now and again I blast the whole sliding area with the hose to remove grit and sand from our beach trips then replenish the grease etc.

On a related aspect, I have a lot of paint peeling off the inside of the middle guide rail, noticed it this afternoon when cleaning the van and jetting out rubbish from the rail !
I've not noticed anybody asking about this before, if its common or not ?
It doesn't appear to be on the surfaces that the roller bears on (I don't think it presses on the back ?) so just a bit concerned as to why it is happening, looks like I'll have to get some paint in and start splashing it about

That sounds good - I like the idea of plasting it off with the hose. You could still soften old grease and sand with white spirit and then blast it with the hose, then regrease etc.

I've not nipped out to check, but I don't think mine (or others I've seen) actually have any paint on the inside of the guide rail. Has someone painted yours specially in at attempt to make it good as though it matches the bodywork. If so I'd not be surprised if its coming off as its being hammered by moving rollers etc. (and sand etc!) I'd have thought

Incidentally, there are posts on this thread that I'm sure weren't there when I posted my eariler replies - does the forum software behave a bit randomly in the way in inserts posts? I'm baffled

I must admit that had gone thru our minds, I'll be having another check today whilst the sun is out. But I can't say I had noticed a silver strip on the sides of dark coloured Bongo's (especially Black ones!) either, so they may well be painted in some way.

I'll check but from memory the face of the rail on mine is painted black, but the recess/interior itself is just natural metal

Right well after closer inspection with better lighting I think someone has done a quite good job of painting the whole interior of the rail - but without thought to the fact that the roller runs along the lower surface and has caused the paint to peel off, also there is only a single coat of paint no primer or anything.






Time I think to remove it all !

Definitely. Time to strip off and 'Celebrate the Slot'

PS - interesting to see the faces on yours match the bodywork as mine don't - they are black against my green bodywork. Is yours standard (I've not studied other Bongos carefully in order to know) I wonder or has some spraying been done to match things up?

Yes the faces and the rail itself all match up, its not been painted in-situ either, so I plan to jet off the paint in the slot but leave the outer trim being silver the slot hardly shows anyway.

....esp. on a silver Bongo. A bit more so on a dark colour like mine but this is the first car I've had witha cliding door and I never want to return to a hinged one again! I can put up with a 'gash' down the side for that
