Winter pack removal

Have done a quick search, but can't find a post on removing the winter pack gubbins. I'm wondering about the pipework - what needs blanking, Vs what needs connecting together

When I remove the bits from under the passenger seat, would a new section of exhaust, without the valve, fit on?

Its the Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve that can play up.

The EGR is not part of the "winter"pack...I belive all diesels have that fitted.
I think the Exaust "valve" is what is being refered to. This can be removed and a new bit of exaust fitted which is a bit longer than standard to make up the "extra space"

I see, me confusing the EGR with the gubbins at the other end of the "cold start" switch . . .

Thanks, Mr M, it is the winter pack bits I need to take out, I'm putting a diesel heater in the space, now that "summers'" here


Haydn, I'm wondering if the exhaust section from a Bongo without the valve has that extra few inches of length (Ohh err Misus!). Might have a crawl under Yorkshirelass' on my way to work!

It's not high on the list of jobs, I'm sure it'll run OK just with the control box under the seat removed, there's what I think is a vacuum pipe to disconnect - anyone suggest what to do with it

I'm watching with interest as I have the same plan in mind, same winter pack valve is right in the place were heater is going under passenger seat.

How much fuel do these diesel heaters use?

Not much at all....I just find them a bit noisy.

On the boats in the marina's, the most noise seems to be outside, via the exhaust. I'm looking at fitting the silencer unit as well.

I also don't tend to use busy campsites, where it might be a nuisance.

The winter pack on mine doesn't work (I tried it before I read about the danger of the valve sticking on!), but one of the rubber vacuum pipes has been disconnected (will have to have a look to check which one) & there are no effects on the rest of the running of the van.

I'm planning on removing mine at some point, to fit a heater, but haven't quite summoned up the courage to cut the metal pipe yet... Partly in case something flows out of it that I'm not expecting & partly because I'm not sure how to seal the cut end off. I was thinking that folding the end back on itself & crimping it securely should do it, but would welcome any other suggestions

Don't think I should be spending anymore on the Bongo until I can find someone to weld up the small rust holes in the front sills anyway & ensure that it passes its next MOT........

Although I've not removed one personally, you will probably find a rubber tube going to a metal pipe in front of the plastic cambelt cover. This is the vacuum pipe that I believe 'powers' the exhaust valve. That pipe is often used to link up to the Waeco MS50 cruise control unit. When you remove the pipe, you must block the end otherwise the vacuum to the brake servo will be affected.

BTW, I'm shortly upgrading my Eberspacher D1LC diesel heater to a newer D2, so there will be a spare on going on the For Sale page.
