cigarette lighter sockets - thicker cable

Re: cigarette lighter sockets - thicker cable
Quality caravans use a CLIPSAL architrave 12V flush socket which
can replace the ciggy lighter socket. They are perfectly reliable up
to 10 Amps (120 Watts) continuously. The matching plugs are not
fused and should be fused elsewhere. Small, neat, and easily wired.
Available from most caravan accessory shops.

Re: cigarette lighter sockets - thicker cable
Just to add to Madmile's advice, even though the current draw is only 2.9 amps, if the cable run is more than about 1.5mtrs, it is better to use cable with a rating far in excess of 2.9 amps to avoid voltage drop. Fridges in particular are sensitive to voltage drop and many of them will switch off if the battery voltage drops too low. If the cable used is too thin, the voltage arriving at the fridge will be lower than the voltage at the battery, so the fridge will switch off unneccarily.madmile wrote:Its 35watts - not 35 amps, so in real terms only about 2.9 amps. A compressor coolbox /fridge is not a particularly big power draw, but its better to give yourself more capacity if its not much more money.rabbitsquasher wrote:you'll know fairly soon if they're up to the job or not! I would recommend 12v outlets for the draw you're requiring, 35 amps is a lot, of course, you may not be actually drawing that much.... I used to be in the trade, I once fitted some ordinary sockets to a Jeep cherokee to run a docs defribulator (did i spell that right?!!) (you know what i meant!) first use made a nice hole in the plastic surround! That was 20A.
It's 12 years ago but the memory has stuck firmly!
Re: cigarette lighter sockets - thicker cable
OK ,this is the sort of thing I will fit but, michty me, these are ugly looking blighters .Is a nice discreet round socket available? Beige and an odd shape does not appeal ( I know that asthetics should not come into it but for me it has to look right or it will bug me)patnben wrote:Quality caravans use a CLIPSAL architrave 12V flush socket which

Re: cigarette lighter sockets - thicker cable
in that case the ordinary 8a cable with in line fuse with original sockets should suffice... I just rewired mine from the leisure battery circuit in the rear to provide a feed for the bottle warmer for Jackson. Our wild camp in scotland was great, but when Jackson woke at 3am and we needed a warm bottle, having to empty everything from the front to switch the ignition on was a right mission!
