Doesn't make sense - crankshaft bush wouldn't cause your noise IMO :?

But what is a 'crankshaft bush', except something that sounds a bit like the kind of headline The Sun might come up with (or a dodgy DVD title) :roll: :shock: :oops: :lol: 8)

I think you mean bearing,if so it could be Crankshaft trouble.
Hope i am wrong because that is painful on the Wallet.

Hi Everyone

Thanks for all the help. My Brother in law has examined my van last night. After removing the cover underneath the engine he noticed metal filings in the cover. He removed the drive belts and could then see the crankshaft pulley had spun on the engine casing. This explains the grinding noise and if not under engine load would not be as loud. The smell was caused by the belt attached to the pulley rubbing also on the engine casing.

So it looks like the crankcase pulley rubber bush has indeed collapsed and need replacing. It has been suggested that it can be bought on line! but I was wondering if anybody had experienced at replacing one?

Get in touch with anyone breaking one - may be worth pming Harry on here, if not try the usual suspects - Bellhill, bongobits, etc.

There's a bush in the rear of the crankshaft which supports a manual gearbox input shaft - thats why i said it wouldn't be causing the problem with an autobox.

Hi Dandy,is the crankshaft pulley rubber joint not called a (Larry Adler) Harmonic Damper.

Yep, thats what I know it as Malc - designed to stop the crankshaft splitting in two. If you've ever driven a Ford Pinto type engine with a goosed harmonic damper you'll know why the crank cracks :?

Well that's good news (cos its not too tricky to fix) and another success to chalk up to the expert diagnosticians on here. One thing I recall about this problem was that it could be caused by having incorrect belts (wrong V-profile in cross-section) as they effectively exerted too much pressure on the pulley faces and split the thing as a result. Would be worth making quite sure correct belts are fitted as part of the repair (I imagine you'll need new ones anyway).
