oh dear, loud rattle noise

Hi all

I would love to visit this site sometime without problems cropping up. Any ideas before I go away and cry please.

Driving along tonight with a sudden and progressive loud rattling sound from the engine , if I ease of the gas it goes but put my foot down and the rattle is very loud. Carried on for 200mtrs and the noise which sounds like a very noisy tapett( but I think its more serious) got really bad, when I pulled up the smell(clutch type smell) was overwhelming. I have a 2.5td diesel Automatic 1996 55k on the clock and now very poorly. Their dosn't seem to be a poor take up of power but it sounds serious.

My own thoughts where the clutch and possible the clutch the plate but other than that I am clueless as a am relative new to Bongo but have no problems in 2 years of use(spoke to soon) but feel an expencsive tempature coming on!!! Any thoughts experts?

I could stand to be corrected, but I don't think you have a clutch plate.

Thinking about it your torque converter may have come loose.

I seem to recall that can result in a jangly noise.

Could it be a pulley?, seem to remember a copule of people having issues.

Yes, forgot that, could be the rubber damper in the crankshaft pulley breaking up. Or pulley come loose.

my crankshaft pulley rubber went and it made a lot of noise - not too dear to replace - second hand ones are available on line - good luck with this

Along the lines of kissing as many frogs as possible to find a solution, my experience down this route was when the back bearing in my alternator gave up. Horrid noise for a day or two of short commutes before the charge/sediment lights came on to give a clue as to the cause.

Best of luck matey, heres hoping its a simple fix.

Thank you to all for your speedy replies, Old age brings many problems least of all thinking an automatic had a clutch!!! Its bl..y cold,dark, you need transport like tommorrow, think we have all been thier, maybe daylight brings hope.Thanks very much Guys and Girls

Don't worry about scanner al.b - he's still learning

Your auto box has 3 clutch packs - although your symptoms don't sound like a clutch problem. A torque convertor drive plate can become loose/crack but very rare - the pulley answer sounds good to me but I'm puzzled by the smell you describe.

Ohh I know about those clutches I just didn't think (as you do) that they would give rise to that type of noise or that type of smell, I was commenting about a flywheel type clutch in a bellhousing as I thought that was what al b was postulating on.

Isn't there yet another clutch in the aircon unit as well?

Ok, lets look at the good news.

It dosn't sound like an internal problem (small end, big end, valve hitting piston or the auto box) as there is a smell.
Lift the lids on the engine Al and run the engine, try it under load, I recon that MM's post points the way.

...and as YBB says, if you can manage to get Wheelquick to look at it and can limp over to Wigan (in the car....obviously!) then that would be a good option. Be of good cheer and travel in hope little grasshopper

Thanks for all the replies, it looks like the crankshaft bush. Q Is it easy to replace? Is it accessable from the front to fit the bush? Can anybody suggest a supplier. Is it a big job to those that have replaced one before. Any help would be appreciated. I suppose I could emigrate???
