Screech when pressing accelerator

Post by paulandyt » Sun Dec 14, 2008 11:51 pm

I have a Freda P Reg 2.5TD 4WD.

When I press the accelerator, a screeching sound comes from the engine area, although it isn't the engine itself. I have been to a garage and they have replaced the inlet gasket manifold, but this didn't fix the problem. They tell me that it sounds like a leaking in the exhaust gasket manifold which is causing the problem and tell me that replacing this gasket should fix the problem.

I just wanted to find out if anyone else has had this problem before before I go back to get that replaced?

Thanks

Paul

What you describe sounds like the relatively common exhaust manifold stud problem, but you would think that would have easily been spotted if replacing a manifold gasket.

I assume they've checked it's not the belts? If they know bongos at all they should know that no 1 manifold stud is a common fault, would have been difficult to miss if they did the gasket.
Whereabouts are you ? you can put your location in by clicking on "user control panel" top right, someone may be able to help out locally with a diagnosis or recommendation of a garage that knows bongos better maybe?

No worries, a search using manifold and stud brings up this lot - http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... mit=Search - have a wade through it & see if it helps, or try doing a search on squealing and belts, etc, loads of info on here the answers in there somewhere, that's if you haven't got it already. It pays to go into the garage armed with as much knowledge as possible  save you a fortune in tooth sucking extras guv

You say they replaced the INLET manifold gasket....It is more likely to be the EXAUST manifold or the Ni 1 Exaust manifold stud.

I find it a little strange that the inlet manifold gasket was replaced, i thought they usually made a ticking sound if they were leaking?

A garage that leapt in and changed an inlet manifold gasket because of a screeching noise under acceleration would really worry me.

I hope you've taken it back and asked them to refund the wasted expenditure, as their work didn't cure the fault.

Jeez, you only have to give some twazzocks a shed and a trolley jack and they think they are mechanics
