Damp/knackered glow plug relay? what's it doing/not doing?
You can't polish a turd - but you can roll it in glitter.

Yes, are you trying to start it in Drive? ('D', not the parking place in front of your garage.)

I had an embarrassing few minutes over the weekend when I also discovered that you can't change out of Park without your foot on the brake

Hi WISHIHADABONGO.

Are you saying that when you turn your ignition key to 'crank' absolutely nothing happens?

Try gently rocking the gear lever back and forth in it's 'Park' position. Also, release and reapply the handbrake (not quite sure if this is connected), and pump your foot brake (ditto!).

And try again...

Hi dandywarhol, isn't the gearselector electrically connected as to isolate the starting of the engine unless it's in 'Park'?

I thought it was - apologies if I'm wrong - so I was 'speculating' that the same could also apply to the handbrake, etc.

The Freda I've just bought for my niece has done this a couple of times over the past week - key goes in, turns ignition on, but absolutely nothing when turned to 'crank'. A little 'rattle' of the gear selector and it fires up.

Probably coincidence

You're right - the inhibitor switch only allows it to start in P or N - I just couldn't get the handbrake/footbrake dance...... :?

:D Ha ha - I see what you mean!

When this happened to me last week, my body just seemed to go into automatic convulsions - with all my limbs pumping on whatever they happened to be touching...

The Bongo then fired up instantly, so I wasn't able to eliminate which - if any - of the likely 'pumps' actually sorted the problem!

Since the footbrake then needs to be pressed before the gear selector can be shifted, I just thought the starting 'connection' might go further than just the gear selector itself - but obviously I don't know.

Does the handbrake switch have any bearing on the starting/gear selection process? Ie: can the car be started, or the gear selector moved with the handbrake in the 'off' position? (Saves me having to go out and check...)

Cheers.
