well, i would not have thought that this job would have been so easy. I took off the door card so as to give me a little more room, undid the cable tidy and low and behold, there were 2 neighbouring wires showing me their bare wires. Stripped them back rejoined them, replaced the fuse, and now everything works.

Sorry I could not hang around on Sunday and give you a hand but at least it turned out easier than you thought, thank goodness.
